BOSTON, MASSACHEUSETTS — After an outpouring of fan theories regarding Noelle, one of the main characters in the game DELTARUNE, being trans, we’ve decided to up the ante here: yes, we at the Post-Gender Post are comfortable–nay, insistent–that every single character in the game is either trans or a trans allegory.

Noelle is the most obvious, and one of the ones that fans were quickest to latch onto. This is due in part to Noelle having antlers, a predominantly male trait. Obvious, right? Well, we’re starting it easy for you.

The next easiest to deduce is the king of the underground, Asgore, who is most assuredly a trans man. I’ve never seen someone pull off a flowery button-up shirt like that. Plus, he’s rocking a solid, well-manicured beard, the likes of which only trans men produce.

Susie, another one of the main characters, is so glaringly obvious I barely need to explain it. Trans genderfucked scene kid. Right? Right. Moving on.

Many others aren’t exactly obvious, though, like Sans. You would be tempted to refer to Sans using he/him pronouns, but it’s quite literally in the name: Sans is sans-pronouns. Sans goes by Sans/Sans and that’s it.

Gerson? The old man? The team has thought long and hard about it, and we’ve actually considered him detrans. As in, he transitioned to being dead, and then detransitioned back to being alive. The state of his being alive after the ending of Chapter 4 is unclear, but for the moment, it is safe to say he likely won’t be making a return.

The Roaring Knight? An egg that hasn’t cracked yet. By Chapter 7, the character will have taken Estradiol Valerate, and will be referred to as “The Roaring Knockers” instead.

Of course, there are many other characters that deserve a spotlight. Tenna and Spamton are in a complicated T4T situationship (at least that’s what I see on my timeline quite often). Queen is a trans drag queen (it’s literally in the name). Even the annoying dog is an allegory for a trans person’s self-inflicted unattainable goal of perfectly passing as the most normal person to have ever existed (showcased, of course, through the race sequence in Chapter 4). The “Mikes” are all trans men (barely needs explaining). Lancer’s a silly little trans boy akin to those who used to play Purble Place in the computer labs at school and still use “:P” instead of emojis. Elnina and Lanino are in a straight-coded relationship, but are both most assuredly trans.

Despite it all, however, the hardest one to be certain of is the character the player acts through, Kris. Despite supposedly using they/them pronouns, which would imply some level of being nonbinary, it’s difficult to know for sure.

“Kris is me, actually,” says one Tumblr user. “He is a reflection of me, the player. Therefore his pronouns are he/him and not they/them, the ones used exclusively for Kris in the game.”

Others have a more radical opinion. “We actually just don’t know Kris’ pronouns,” said another user in a YouTube comment. “Kris doesn’t talk in the game. Everybody else is just too scared to ask the quiet kid their pronouns, so everyone assumes a default nonbinary approach.”

Although it’s hard to know for certain what Toby Fox’s plans are for the game and the characters, he’s made one thing very clear: the only weird route is the cis route.

(As the writers were finalizing the details of the web of trans characters shown throughout the first four chapters of the game, a vision appeared before us. A beam of light. Blinding, surreal. From that light appeared none other than Rouxls Kaard, the puzzle master from Chapter 1.

“Whateth about me?” he saide, flourishing that signature smile.

“Shit, we forgoteth about Rouxls Kaard,” one of our editors proclaimed, gazing at the boarde.

A most surprised look crawledeth across Rouxls’ face. “GOD DAMN IT,” he said, disappearing through that same light that blinded us just moments before.

Rouxls Kaard is an androgynous genderfluid pansexual.
