THREADS — When replying to one of her mutuals’ posts this morning, Sally, a local ally intent on using the proper pronouns, was put in an awful position when she realized the person used xe/xir neopronouns.
“It was the most difficult sentence I’ve ever had to craft, and it sounded a little unnatural, but I made it work without needing to use her—sorry, not her… use the pronouns that the person had in her bio.”
When asked how she felt about “they/them” pronouns, Sally said, “I think it’s fine, but I try to prioritize the normal ones, even if they have they/them in their bio first. Things other than she/her or he/him just don’t feel right to me. I don’t understand why anyone would call themselves an ‘it’ either.”
In an online back-and-forth discussion with a nonbinary person, Sally expressed how hard it was being an ally and remembering to check a person’s bio, claiming that “social media was easier five years ago when this stuff didn’t exist.”
“Usually when I get called out for misgendering, I block them,” she said, showing us the message log. “I don’t need that negativity in my life. It’s tough being an ally sometimes.”
Despite her discomfort with pronouns and neopronouns, Sally asserts her ally status, saying “an old friend from high school turned into a transwoman.”
